Silver Award

Sports Day!

Overview

Elizabeth W. and Stephanie L. completed their Silver Award on August 7th and 8th, 2004 by conducting a Sports Day for 25 boys and girls at Sexton Mountain Elementary School. For 7 hours Stephanie and Elizabeth led rule and safety clinics on kickball, ultimate Frisbee, wall ball, Capture the Flag and football then held games in each sport.  The weather was hot and sunny but every participant seemed to have a fabulous time!

What badges did you earn for your Silver Award?

"On the Court, On the Playing Field and Sports for Life."

What did you find most challenging about earning the Silver Award and/or doing your project?

"The most challenging part of our Silver Award was finding a date that worked and the advertising. All along we knew what we wanted to do, but it was really hard to find a date that the fields were open, our help was around and we didn’t have another activity going on. Also, getting the information out to the public was difficult."

What did you find most rewarding?

"The most rewarding thing that we got out of our Silver Award was when we sat down with the girls and discussed the day. Many of them said how much fun they had had and how they would come back every day if they could. To be honest, this feeling was better than any gift that we could have received just because we had finally earned our Silver Award."

Looking back, what you might do differently?

"If there was one thing that we could do differently it would be to advertise better. We handed out fliers at day camp, but we just couldn’t get to everyone. Plus, the date of our field day was also inconvenient to many people; it was right in the middle of the summer, when many people are on vacation."

What advice do you have for other girls working toward their Silver Award?

"No matter what happens, don’t give up. We can’t count the number of times that we wanted to quit, we both were playing soccer, balancing school, family, band, friends and church, sure it was hard, but we did it. If something goes wrong, put it past you and start somewhere else. If you get frustrated with one part, move on to something new. The path will be hard, just like everything else in life, but the payoff is out of this world!!"
