Why should I come to every Neighborhood Leader Meeting?

To get great information to make your troop more successful and fun! To meet other leaders and find out what they do with their troops that works. To hear from your Service Team about what's going on. Find out about great service opportunities that are available to your girls. Because Zana makes the best brownies you will ever taste!

What are Neighborhood Dues?

Each troop pays the Neighborhood a yearly amount in Neighborhood Dues. This year the amount is $10.00. This money pays for copies, postage and other supplies. It also helps pays for Neighborhood sponsored events like Thinking Day.

What training is required to be a Girl Scout Leader

  • New Leader Orientation is a Neighborhood-sponsored training. It is the "nuts-and-bolts" of being a leader, and is a one-time only training.

  • New Leader Basics is a council-sponsored training. It is a one-time training for all new leaders and reviews the history of Girl Scouts and provides information on a general level.

  • Program Age Level Training is a council-sponsored training and should be taken every time a leader starts a new age level, such as Daisy, Brownie, Junior, Girls Scouts 11-17.

The above ones are the three trainings required just to be a leader. There are also two outdoor trainings that are required if you want to take your troop on an overnight campout. Also CPR/Community First Aid is required of one adult per troop for many away events. It is most logical to have one of the leaders take this training as they are usually on all the excursions troops take.

When do I have to use permission forms?

Whenever your troop meets somewhere other than your regular meeting place or whenever your troop goes on any outing. In other words, if you are not at your regular meeting place, you need a permission slip. Refer to Safety Wise for more information.  Click here for forms.

What is a Health History Form? When is it needed?

Health History forms are to be filled out whenever a troop or girl takes part in very active activities. Some leaders like to have them for all girls just in case. Again, refer to Safety Wise.  Click here for forms.

What is Thinking Day?

Very simplistically, Thinking Day is a day in February set aside for Girl Scouts and Girl Guides around the world to "think" about each other and the world wide organization they belong to. In the past, our Neighborhood has held fun and educational events celebrating topics such as Countries around the World, Famous Women, States of the US and Endangered Animals.

Why do I have to have a cookie parent? What are the responsibilities?

Well, you could act as cookie parent but, aren't you doing enough?  Seriously, the cookie parent manages the cookie sale for your troop.  Among other things, she/he attends all training, manages booth sales, and manages the money. It is a big responsibility so you should have someone in the role that you feel very confident in. The cookie parent must be a registered adult in Girl Scouts as they are handling troop money. Fore more information, see our Cookie Page.

Can Daisy Girl Scouts sell cookies?

No. Daisy Girl Scouts are not involved in money earning activities.

What is the Neighborhood Campout?

Each year in the late spring, our Neighborhood sponsors a campout for the troops in our Neighborhood. The girls take part in crafts, songs, skits, and other fun activities. They also have a swap exchange that is a big hit! News about the campout will be made available as soon as a site is secured. It takes many volunteers to make the campout a success so, think about contributing your time and talents!

Are Daisy Girl Scouts included in the Campout?

Yes. But if the Campout has an overnight, Daisy Girl Scouts are not allowed to spend the night, only the day.

What are SWAPS?

When do I have to fill out an activity roster?

It is important that whenever you are participating in an activity away from your regular meeting place, that someone who is not along on the activity have a list of all participating so if there is a problem (getting back late...) the at home contact person can reach all the other parents.

When do I have to fill out a Money Earning Project application?

Anytime your troop wishes to take part in a Money Earning activity other than cookies. Important note: you may not take part in any other fundraising activities unless you are taking part in the cookie sale.

When do I have to fill out an Overnight Activity/Troop Travel Form?

Anytime your troop wants to travel somewhere and spend the night -other than the Neighborhood Campout. This needs to be turned into the Neighborhood Chair at least 2 weeks prior to your departure date. Refer to SafetyWise.

Where do I get forms if I need them?

You may get forms from Council, request them from the Neighborhood Chair or download them from our site or the Council website.

What is Family Giving?

Family Giving is our annual campaign encouraging families to make a donation to Girl Scouting. There are wonderful opportunities available to girls and leaders because of Family Giving.

  • Uniforms and supplies for girls who may not otherwise be able to afford them!

  • Lower cost for Girl Scout activities!

  • More Girl Scout activities!

Where does a Troop get money to start up?

Since our Council doesn't do cookie sales until after the first of the year, you gotta wonder, "How do we manage until then?"  It is very common to ask for a start up donation from the parents.  The amount is determined by figuring what kinds of things your troop really needs like, a first aid kit, craft supplies and try-its/badges/patches.  You can also ask for donations of supplies.  Many parents have extras of things around the house!  Please be sensitive to families that might find a start up donation unmanageable.

Do we have to have a checking account?

If your troop has more than $100.00 you need to have a checking account.  Consult with our Neighborhood Treasurer regarding the best way to open one.  One important reminder:  all checks must have 2 signatures!

What is the procedure for adding new girls to our Troop?

Because girls on the wait list have first priority for openings in troops it is important that you go through your School Organizer!  See the Service Team Directory to find the School Organizer for your school.

When do we need to register?

All girls must be registered before their 2nd troop meeting. You cannot participate in neighborhood functions like, the Fall Event or Cookie Sales, if your troop is not registered.

Should the parents in my troop be registered?

It is a good idea!  For little cost they will be covered by GSUSA insurance in case of accident!

Registration Reminder:

Always submit registrations with a Dues Summary.  Contact our Neighborhood Registrar for more information or forms.

What are the most important things to read?

Your New Leader Orientation Guide has most common answers to new leader questions. Safety Wise has huge amounts of great advice and information. The Great Guide has huge amounts of things to do!

Why should I have a mentor?

So you can get to know one experienced leader in the neighborhood who can be available to answer the questions you can't find answers to!

What is the best way to attach a patch, badge or try-it?

Use a washable glue stick for positioning (rather than pins) and use a zig zag stich with invisible thread on sewing machine. Don't use the "Patch Attach" stuff sold at the Girl Scout Store. It makes an ugly mess.
