Money Earning Project Application

Don't Forget to Clear the Project!

Money earning projects are not a main focus of the Girl Scout Program.  You might think differently during cookie season, but it's the truth!

Money earning projects should be discussed only after it is determined that proceeds from troop dues and the Cookie Program will not be enough to run the troop and support any special projects.

Money should be used in the year it is earned.  Exceptions are made for Troops who have Intent to Travel forms on file at the Council Office.

Turn in your Money Earning Project Application to your Neighborhood Chair at least 4 weeks before the project date.  You will receive a copy from the Council office letting you know if your project has been approved.  DO NOT do your project unless you have received that form copy granting you permission.

If your Troop decides it needs to do money earning projects to reach a goal, there are many things to consider.

Review Council Policies Pertaining to Money Earning and Finances

  • Policy: Only troop/groups who participate in all Council-sponsored sales may organize other money earning activities.
  • Policy: The only Council-sponsored money earning projects are those approved by the Board of Directors. Only registered troops/groups and registered girls may participate in those Council-sponsored sales.

  • Policy: Participation in money earning activities other than Council-sponsored product sales by troops/groups must have demonstrated need and prior approval to be considered an approved, supervised Girl Scout activity.

  • Policy: Girl members may not engage in any direct solicitation of money as Girl Scouts.

  • Policy: All approaches to corporations for cash or in-kind contributions other than troop sponsorships must be cleared through the Girl Scout Office.

  • Policy: Individuals are not authorized to sign any legal documents in the name of Girl Scouts - Columbia River Council, Inc. Contracts are entered into only by persons authorized by the Board of Directors.

Can We Sell Commercial Products to earn Money?

  • Sales of products like Tupperware, Discovery Toys, Lloyds of London,...and/or coupons such as Gold C Coupon Book, Entertainment Coupon Book, pizza coupons,... are not allowed.

  • Girl Scouts can not do anything that appears to endorse any product not approved by the National organization.  That includes selling cans of pop or other brand items at events.

Additional Guidelines

  • During Council-sponsored product sales Girl Scouts may not participate in any other money-earning project that involves direct customer interactions.

  • Prior agreement must be reached through the appropriate Neighborhood Chair if a money-earning project is to be held outside your own Neighborhood.

  • Money earning projects held between August 15 and November 15 must meet these United Way guidelines:

  • product is sold at fair market value

  • product sale does not limit the agency’s capacity to assist United Way during the campaign

  • the product will not be marketed to companies or employees at the workplace

  • Raffles and bingo are prohibited

  • Any money earning project may not be counted as service hours, or to fulfill requirements for awards and insignias.

  • Girl Scout troops may not earn money by providing program to other Girl Scouts.

To avoid disappointment, it is best to ask questions before planning any money earning activity.
