Land Sports Checkpoints

Read the Step 1 checkpoints and these Land Sports checkpoints before reading the activity specific checkpoints that follow.

Planning and Supervision

The leader:

Makes sure instructors have thorough knowledge of safety practices, equipment use and maintenance, and technique.

bullet

Reviews the rules and operating procedures with the girls before each session.

bullet

Makes sure the safety rules are written, understood, practiced, and posted at the site.

Equipment

The leader:

Secures all equipment in a dry, locked storage area.

Clothing

The leader:

bullet

Makes sure girls and adults avoid wearing jewelry, especially pierced earrings, looped earrings, bracelets, and necklaces in contact sports or where jewelry may become entangled in equipment.

Emergency Procedures and First Aid

The leader:

Makes sure a list of emergency telephone numbers, including those for emergency rescue ser vices and the police, is posted or carried by the adult in charge.

Teaches girls to take shelter away from tall objects in a storm with lightning and thunder. Find the lowest point in an open flat area.. Squat low to the ground on the balls of the feet. Have girls place their hands on their knees with their heads between them. Instruct girls to make themselves the smallest targets possible and to minimize their contact with the ground.


Archery Specific Checkpoints

Archery is not recommended for Daisy or Brownie Girl Scouts. A participant in archery activities must be old enough to understand safety procedures and handle equipment so as not to endanger herself, other participants, or onlookers.

Planning and Supervision

One adult is a currently certified National Archery Association instructor or has equivalent certification or documented experience indicating knowledge and skill in teaching/supervising archery.

A ratio of 1 to 10 participants to each instructor is observed.

bullet

A whistle system for starting, retrieving, and emergency stop ping is in effect.

bullet

Girls develop skills based on proper procedures and form, such as stringing the bow, nocking the arrow, stance, sighting, and observing safety practices.

bullet

Archers straddle the shooting line to shoot.

bullet

Girls waiting to shoot are behind the shooting line.

bullet

A ground quiver for arrows is provided for each line of shooters.

Equipment

bullet

Bows and arrows are appropriate to the age, size, strength, and ability of the girls.

bullet

Girls have finger and arm protection, such as finger tabs and arm guards. Right- and left-handed models are available.

bullet

Arrows are not warped and do not have cracked nocks or loose or missing feathers.

bullet

Bowstrings do not have broken or loose strands.

bullet

Bows do not have loose or broken arrow rests.

bullet

Backstops for targets are in good repair.

bullet

A beginner uses arrows that extend one to two inches in front of the bow when the bow is at full draw. Only target tip arrows are used, never broadhead tips.

Transportation

Provisions are made for safe handling of archery equipment to and from the range.

bullet

Archery games away from a regular course are well supervised and appropriate to age, skill level, and location of shooting.

Site

For an Outdoor Range

Targets are not placed in front of houses, roads, trails, or tents. Avoid areas with any pedestrian traffic. Clear areas of brush. A hillside backstop is preferable.

bullet

The shooting area and the spectator area behind the shooting area are clearly marked.

bullet

In the shooting area, there is a distance of at least 50 yards behind the targets and 20 yards on each side of the range.

bullet

An outdoor range is not used after nightfall.

For an Indoor Range

bullet

An indoor range shooting distance is a maximum of 20 yards.

bullet

Targets are well lighted.

bullet

Doors or entries onto the range are locked or blocked from the inside. (Do not block fire exits.)
