Progression in Girl Planning & Leadership Skills Workshop |
|
Thank you to Jackie O. for putting this together and sharing her outline with us!
Introduction:
Workshop subject
Why me? - not an expert but very important to me
Resources used: GS website (just for girls), Safety-wise pg. 24-25, personal experience
Nothing new just maybe you haven’t heard it in awhile
Opportunity to share ideas
Where do we do start?
Start at the beginning with Daisies.
Not too late even if you are beginning with an older age group.
How do we do this?
These skills can be developed throughout all activities
(service projects, planning trips, meeting
activities & badge requirements)
Daisy Girl Scouts:
More work at this level/requires advance planning
Simple choices/simple votes
Example: Do you want to pick up trash at the school or make valentines for lonely grandmas/grandpas?
Brownie Girl Scouts:
Some pre-planning Leader will need to explain why these people need help & give examples.
Offer more choices
Vote on a choice
After decision…brainstorm how to complete this activity-have each girl offer one idea
This is a great time to introduce how to brainstorm ideas.
Example: Do we want to help seniors, animals, or our neighbors? (After voting on seniors) – How do we want to help the elderly
Junior Girl Scouts:
Less pre-planning - Leader can have suggestions/backpocket ideas
Ask the girls
Have the girls create a plan
Lots of discussion with some leader input/guidance
Example: What kind of service project shall we do? What kind of supplies do you think we’ll need?
Cadette Girl Scouts:
Minimum pre-planning - Leader may suggest resources to find ideas (great guide, website, past troop experiences, etc).
Leader is now in more of an advisor role.
Example: What service projects do you want to do this year? Which committee would you like to work on/lead? Who will make phone calls, gather supplies, etc.?
Other opportunities to experience progression:
Petals to IPs
Bronze to Gold Awards
Key Components to girl planning/leadership:
Advance Planning
Girl Input
Consider the age group. Big difference between 1st year & 3rd year Br./Jr.
Create A Plan
Use the plan
Give girls positive feedback throughout the whole plan
Evaluate –
Girls will learn from both successful and unsuccessful results
What’s great about this?
For Girls - Girls have a voice, ownership, and accountability with their troops’ activities.
For Adults – Takes pressure off of us. Each passing year gets a little easier. We slowly move into an advisor role. We role model leadership behavior.
